Groundwater depletion lowers the water table and reduces baseflow to streams, causing streams to dry up or become intermittent and harming aquatic habitats and species. With less groundwater input, pollutants and nutrients are less diluted, so concentrations of contaminants (including salts, nitrates, and dissolved metals) can rise and water quality worsens. In coastal areas, overpumping can cause saltwater intrusion into aquifers, making both groundwater and connected surface water too saline for drinking or irrigation. Excessive decline of groundwater can also mobilize naturally occurring contaminants (like arsenic), change stream temperatures, and lead to land subsidence that damages infrastructure and further alters water flow and quality.
