Strip cropping is an erosion-control practice in which a farmer plants alternating, relatively narrow strips of different crops—typically strips of soil-conserving grasses or legumes alternated with strips of row crops—across the slope of a field, usually following the contour. By breaking up the slope with bands of vegetation that slow water flow and trap soil, strip cropping reduces surface runoff, prevents soil erosion, and helps retain moisture and nutrients. It also aids fertility management and pest control by rotating crop types and increasing field biodiversity, which can improve long-term productivity.
