In Chapter 6 we learn Gatsby was born James Gatz to poor North Dakota farmers. At seventeen he renamed himself Jay Gatsby and became Dan Cody’s protégé, learning manners and dreaming of wealth. Cody’s influence explains Gatsby’s polished persona and hunger for status.
