The respiratory system helps your body take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide, which your cells need to live. Air enters through your nose or mouth, goes down the trachea, and moves into the bronchi before reaching the lungs. In the lungs tiny air sacs called alveoli let oxygen pass into your blood and remove carbon dioxide. The diaphragm, a muscle under the lungs, moves up and down to help push air in and out.
