Lesson 3.2 Case Study
Directions: Read the following case study from the text.
Theo’s Taste in Food
Theo’s food preferences are very simple. He likes meat, bananas, rice, yogurt, and anything made from white or yellow potatoes. Theo recently learned that to reach optimal performance in school and other activities, a middle schooler needs to eat a wide variety of nutrients. He learned that one of the best ways to do this is to eat foods of varying colors.
Theo would like to get all the nutrients he needs. Theo also wants to be the best he can be on his baseball team.
Theo’s older sister tells him about what she is doing at college to get all the nutrients she needs. She orders capsules called “The Rainbow” online. The website says that each capsule is full of nutrients and made from real fruits and vegetables. The label says that the capsules are good for anyone who wants to get all needed nutrients without changing their eating habits.
When Theo mentions these capsules to his guardian, they explain that he should attempt to get his nutrients from food sources first. Capsules and other supplements can then be used to fill in gaps. He wonders if his sister knows this.

Lesson 3.2 Case Study — Theo’s Taste in Food — Suggested responses
1. Do you think Theo will choose to take “The Rainbow” capsules? Why or why not?
He might be tempted because the capsules promise an easy way to get nutrients and his sister uses them, but he should be encouraged to try getting nutrients from a variety of foods first. If he still has gaps, a supplement could be considered after talking with a guardian and health professional.

2. What or who is internally influencing Theo? What or who is externally influencing him?
- Internal influences: his personal food preferences (likes simple, starchy foods), desire to do well in school and sports.
- External influences: his sister and her recommendation, the supplement website/marketing, and his guardian’s advice.

3. Imagine that Theo’s guardian is the one who suggests he use “The Rainbow” capsules. How might this change the situation?
If his guardian suggests them, Theo may be more likely to take them. However, guardian endorsement should be accompanied by checking product safety, ingredients, and consulting a healthcare provider to ensure the supplement is appropriate and not a substitute for a balanced diet.

4. How might Theo feel differently about the situation if he notes that the packaging says “Not FDA approved”?
He may become more cautious or skeptical, since “Not FDA approved” indicates the product’s claims and safety haven’t been verified by the FDA. That could make him seek more information or ask a guardian/doctor before taking the capsules.
