Fertilizer use can harm the environment when excess nutrients—especially nitrogen and phosphorus—wash off fields or leach into groundwater, fueling algal blooms that deplete oxygen and create "dead zones" in lakes, rivers and coastal waters. Nitrate contamination also threatens drinking-water quality, while nitrogen fertilizers release nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, and ammonia that contributes to air pollution and soil acidification. Over time these changes reduce biodiversity, damage aquatic ecosystems, and can make soils and water less healthy for people and wildlife.
