Water shortages are expected to become widespread because rising populations, urbanization and economic growth are increasing demand for drinking water, food and industry while climate change alters rainfall, shrinks snowpacks and glaciers, and makes droughts more frequent and severe. At the same time pollution, over‑extraction of groundwater, inefficient irrigation and aging infrastructure reduce usable supply, and unequal distribution and weak water governance leave many communities unable to access the water that remains.
