Atmospheric carbon dioxide is expected to rise because human activities—primarily burning fossil fuels for energy and transport, plus deforestation and certain industrial processes—are emitting CO2 much faster than natural sinks (oceans and plants) can remove it. Growing population and economic activity tend to raise energy use and land conversion, and some climate feedbacks (warming-driven soil and permafrost carbon release, and reduced ocean uptake) can further reduce the planet’s ability to absorb CO2. Because CO2 persists in the atmosphere for decades to centuries, continued net emissions will drive future concentrations upward.
