Conversely, it can worsen water quality when intensive energy-crop cultivation increases fertilizer, pesticide and sediment runoff, or when biofuel and biorefinery processes produce organic‑rich wastewater and chemical effluents that raise biological oxygen demand and cause eutrophication; ash or poorly stored feedstock can also leach metals and toxins. The net effect depends on crop choice, land-management practices, and wastewater treatment.
