Imperialism expanded economic opportunities for U.S. businesses by opening new overseas markets, securing resources, and encouraging investment, and it drove growth of the navy and an overseas military presence after the Spanish–American War. At home it produced sharp political debate and an active anti-imperialist movement, while also increasing military spending and casualties for some communities. Imperialist ideas also reinforced racial hierarchies and exclusionary policies, affecting Native Americans, African Americans, immigrants, and how many Americans thought about their country's role in the world.
