Fossil fuels formed when large amounts of once-living plants and microscopic organisms were buried in sediment and, over millions of years, were transformed by heat, pressure and chemical reactions into coal, oil and natural gas. Because this conversion takes geological time and specific conditions, the stores we extract today accumulated very slowly and are effectively fixed in supply. Humans burn them far faster than new reserves can form, so they are considered nonrenewable resources.
