U.S. reliance on fossil fuels — especially imported oil and gas — gives exporting countries political and economic leverage: their governments (or cartels like OPEC+) can restrict supply or coordinate cuts and cause sudden price spikes that hurt consumers, businesses and the military. Buying fuel also transfers large sums to foreign regimes, some authoritarian, which can be used to pursue policies contrary to U.S. interests. Because energy markets are global, even domestic production can’t fully shield us from disruptions or coordinated actions abroad, making energy dependence a strategic vulnerability.
