Flooding reshapes rivers by increasing flow velocity and water volume, which intensifies erosion of banks and beds, transports and deposits large amounts of sediment on floodplains, alters channel shape, and redistributes nutrients that can both enrich and disrupt aquatic habitats. It also reconnects rivers with their floodplains, recharging groundwater and supporting wetland ecosystems, but can damage riparian vegetation and infrastructure and spread pollutants. Human activities strongly influence flooding: urbanization and impermeable surfaces speed runoff and raise peak flows; deforestation and drainage reduce soil infiltration; channelization, levees and river straightening concentrate flows and can worsen downstream flooding; and dams alter timing and magnitude of floods. Climate change driven by human emissions further changes flood frequency and intensity through altered precipitation and extreme weather.
