To apply you generally must be a U.S. citizen with a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) by the start of the grant, submit a strong academic record and letters of recommendation, and provide a clear study/research or teaching plan and language preparation appropriate to the host country; specific eligibility and language requirements vary by country and by the particular Fulbright award. Awards are made competitively through a peer-review process that evaluates academic and professional achievement, leadership potential, feasibility and clarity of the proposed project, and cultural engagement; final placements are approved by binational Fulbright Commissions or the U.S. Department of State and typically include a stipend and support for travel, living expenses, and health insurance.
