Here are simple things I listen for when I hear a new song. I use short words so a 6th grader can understand.

1. Beat / rhythm — Is it fast or slow? Does it make my head nod or my foot tap?
2. Melody — Is the tune easy to hum? Do I remember it after the song ends?
3. Voice — Do I like how the singer sounds? Is the voice strong, soft, or weird in a good way?
4. Lyrics — Do the words make sense or talk about something I care about? Are they easy to sing along?
5. Hook / chorus — Is there a part that sticks in my head? The part I want to play again?
6. Instruments / sounds — Do the guitar, piano, drums, or other sounds mix well? Do they add cool stuff?
7. Mood / feeling — Does the song make me happy, sad, excited, or relaxed? Do I like that feeling?
8. Energy / pace — Is the song calm or full of energy? Does that fit what I want to hear now?
9. Originality — Does the song feel new or different from others? Or is it just like every other song?
10. Production / sound quality — Does the song sound clear and clean, or messy and hard to hear?

Quick test: After one listen, ask: Would I press play again? If yes, you probably like it. If no, you might not.

Remember: everyone likes different things, so it’s okay if others feel another way.
