Each Halloween, tourists flock to Salem, Massachusetts, scaring themselves silly at the various haunted houses. Many people consider Salem to be the perfect Halloween spot, given its spooky history. In 1692, young girls in the area began throwing outlandish fits, during which they screamed and contorted their bodies. They appeared to be possessed, and in fact, the townspeople concluded this must be the case. Mass hysteria about witchcraft broke out in the area. As a result, twenty innocent individuals were executed as witches. Even today, Halloween tourists occasionally find themselves facing arrest for witchcraft. Luckily for them, though, the "officers" are just actors reenacting history. It's all part of the Salem experience.
