1) Industrial discharge — factories and processing plants release untreated or partially treated wastewater containing chemicals, heavy metals, acids, dyes and heat. These substances can be toxic to aquatic life, accumulate in the food chain, and change river chemistry.

2) Agricultural runoff — rain washes fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus), pesticides and soil into rivers. This causes eutrophication (algal blooms and oxygen loss), kills fish and harms water quality for humans and wildlife.
