A related specialty is bone china, a type of porcelain made with bone ash that is especially white and strong. Beyond traditional pottery, advanced or technical ceramics (oxides like alumina and zirconia, and non‑oxides like silicon carbide and silicon nitride) are engineered for high strength, wear resistance, high temperatures and electronic uses. Glass‑ceramics and refractories form other categories: glass‑ceramics combine glassy and crystalline phases for tailored thermal properties, while refractories are made to withstand very high temperatures.
