Crayon manner is a printmaking technique developed in the late 18th–19th century to imitate the appearance and texture of crayon or chalk drawings, achieved by combining etching, stipple, mezzotint and roulettes to reproduce grainy, broken marks. Pastel manner refers to the use of pastel sticks—pure powdered pigment with a minimal binder—applied to paper to create soft, velvety color, delicate blending, and luminous surfaces, and by extension to works made in that medium. Chalk is a traditional drawing material (natural calcium carbonate or colored compressed pigment) used for sketches and studies; it produces matte, dusty marks and comes in varieties such as black, red (sanguine) and white for use on toned paper.
