Pierre Gustave Toutant–Beauregard (P.G.T. Beauregard, 1818–1893) was a Louisiana-born West Point graduate who became one of the Confederacy’s first and best-known generals. He ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861, played a key role at the First Battle of Bull Run, and later commanded Confederate forces in the Gulf and along the Mississippi. After the war he worked in railroads and engineering and publicly urged reconciliation between North and South.
