all, elegant, and carnation pink, flamingos are my favorite birds to photograph. I have photographed these birds in their natural habitats on multiple continents. My latest trip was to Spain, where I learned the origin of the bird’s name. In Spanish “flamingo” comes from the word flamenco, which is a popular style of dance. Flamenco means flame, which is the perfect way to describe these gorgeous birds. I can hardly believe that flamingos are a dull gray and white when they are born. It is the diet they consume, including shrimp and other crustaceans, that gives them their pink flame color.

I have also traveled to the lagoons of India, where I spotted these water birds in abundance. It’s easy to take a shot of a flamingo standing on one leg because they do this little acrobatic act often. Through my lens they look like graceful ballet dancers. One place I never go to find flamingos is the zoo. I do not want to witness these birds in captivity. They belong to nature where they can be free and enjoy their lives. Some zookeepers will argue that flamingos live longer in captivity than in the wild. True, they live about 30 years in the wild and 50 years in the average zoo. But what is their quality of life in a zoo?

Flamingos need to be protected as some varieties are endangered. For example, there are only about 30,000 Andean flamingos left in the world. I will keep photographing and admiring these birds for as long as I can.
