Read the following excerpt from Mohandas Gandhi: Truth in Action.
At that time, most of India’s people lived under the caste system. Each person was born into a certain class, or caste, and had to follow its rules. But Untouchables were considered outside the caste system. Everyone shunned them. Members of other castes feared they would be polluted if even the shadow of an Untouchable touched them. But Gandhi called the Untouchables “Children of God” and declared that he would fast until something was done to make their lives better. Through his efforts, Untouchables were allowed into temples and invited to participate in Indian assemblies. And the British agreed never to make any law that called a person an “untouchable.”
