Plagiarism is using someone else’s words, ideas, or work and presenting them as your own without giving proper credit. This can include copying text directly from a book, website, or another student; paraphrasing someone’s ideas without citation; using images, music, or data without permission or acknowledgement; and even submitting the same work for more than one class without permission (self-plagiarism). Proper citation and quotation are required whenever you use material that is not originally yours.

Plagiarism is wrong for several reasons. Ethically, it is a form of dishonesty because it takes credit for work you did not create. Academically, it undermines the purpose of learning: when a student copies instead of doing their own work, they miss the chance to develop skills and understanding. Plagiarism is also unfair to the original creators, who deserve recognition for their efforts. In many cases it can have serious consequences, including failing grades, disciplinary action from a school, damage to one’s reputation, and possible legal problems if copyrighted material is used without permission.

To avoid plagiarism, always acknowledge your sources. Use quotation marks for direct quotes and provide citations in the format required by your teacher or institution. When you paraphrase, make sure you rewrite the idea in your own words and still cite the original source. If you are ever unsure whether something needs a citation, ask a teacher or another knowledgeable adult for guidance. Being careful and honest about sources shows respect for others’ work and helps you learn and grow as a student.
