The Byzantine Empire shaped Russia in at least three major ways: first, through religion—Prince Vladimir’s conversion in 988 brought Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which became the foundation of Russian spiritual life, morality, and church institutions and tied Rus’ culturally to Byzantium; second, through language, learning, and art—Byzantine missionaries (and Greek liturgical books) introduced the Cyrillic alphabet and Orthodox liturgy, and Byzantine icon painting, mosaics, and church-plan models influenced Russian religious art and architecture; and third, through politics and commerce—close trade with Constantinople and exposure to its imperial court gave Rus’ models of centralized authority, court ritual, legal ideas (and even the notion of a divinely sanctioned ruler reflected later in the title “tsar”), while commercial links integrated Russia into wider Mediterranean and Black Sea economic networks.
