Both the Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1279) dynasties achieved durable political unity by building strong centralized bureaucracies, promoting a common Confucian ideology, and integrating the economy and society through infrastructure and institutions. Each dynasty reestablished order after periods of fragmentation, standardized laws and tax systems, and staffed provincial and central administrations with officials selected increasingly through the civil service examination system, which created a merit-based elite loyal to the court. They also encouraged cultural cohesion—through state patronage of education, ritual, and the civil code—and supported transportation and communication networks (roads, canals, postal routes) that knit regions together and facilitated trade and tax collection. These shared strategies—administrative centralization, ideological legitimation, and economic integration—were key to both dynasties’ success in unifying China.
