3 3/5 was the part in parenthesis. So now do 5-3 3/5.

Jen told you to subtract. You didn't do that.

first multiply 3/5 by 6
3/5 * 6 = 18/5
then convert 5 into fraction such that its denominator is 5:
5 = 25/5
therefore:
(25-18)/5 = 7/5 or 1 2/5 gallons
so there,, :)
3/5 * 6 = 18/5
then convert 5 into fraction such that its denominator is 5:
5 = 25/5
therefore:
(25-18)/5 = 7/5 or 1 2/5 gallons
so there,, :)

3 3/5 gallons is how much water you drank after 6 days. 6 days * 3/5 gallons each day is 3 3/5. BUT..the question is how much water is left. If you started with 5 gallons, now you must do 5-3 3/5 for your answer.

ok so the answer would then be 1 2/5s gallons?

You first need to find out how many gallons would be drank after 6 days, so you multiply 3/5 * 6 to get 18/5. Then you subtract 18/5 from the original 5 gallons so 5 - 18/5. You have to make equivalent fractions so you put the 5 over one, and multiply the numerator and denominator by the same thing so 5*5 and 1*5. This give you a new fraction of 25/5, which was the original amount of 5 gallons. Then you subtract the original amount from the amount drank after 6 days, so 25/5 - 18/5= 7/5. Then you make the improper fraction into a mixed number, divide 7 by 5 to get 2 1/5 gallons.

Start: 5 gallons of water
Drank: 3/5 each day for 6 days, or 3/5 x
6/1=18/5
Subtract what was drank from the 5 gallons
2 ways to do this:
IMPROPER FRACTION:
5/1 minus 18/5=25/5-18/5=7/5 or 1 2/5
MIXED FRACTION WHERE WHOLE NUMBER IS RENAMED:
5 minus 3 3/5 = 4 5/5 - 3 3/5 = 1 2/5
Started with 5 gallons, drank 3 3/5 gallons, so 1 2/5 gallons was left at the end of 6 days.
