Franklin’s "Join, or Die" cartoon was highly effective — its stark image of a severed snake labeled with the colonies and the blunt caption made the need for colonial unity immediate and easy to understand. By reducing a complex political argument to a single life-or-death visual metaphor (broken snake segments, each named for a colony) and appearing widely in print, it had strong emotional and rhetorical power to persuade many colonists to support cooperation.
