Deciduous forests in India are mainly found in central and eastern parts of the country (for example in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and eastern Maharashtra), in the lower Himalayan foothills (Uttarakhand, parts of Himachal and West Bengal) and in parts of southern peninsular India (for example in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh). These forests require a climate with a pronounced wet and dry season — typically a tropical monsoon or sub‑tropical climate with moderate to high annual rainfall (roughly 700–2000 mm depending on type) and a distinct dry season that causes the trees to shed their leaves. Two common tree species in Indian deciduous forests are teak (Tectona grandis) and sal (Shorea robusta). Two animals that live in these forests are the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) and the chital or spotted deer (Axis axis).
