Abraham Lincoln had only 39.8 percent of the popular vote but he won the election. He won most of the Northern states that had many electoral votes. The other three candidates split the rest of the votes so none of them beat him in the Electoral College. Lincoln was not on the ballot in many Southern states and the South voted for other men, which helped divide their votes. Because the Electoral College picks the president, Lincoln won even with less than half of the popular vote.
