Models can be used to illustrate environmental processes by representing the key pools and fluxes of water or nutrients and showing how material moves between them over time. For example, a watershed hydrologic model can track precipitation, infiltration, soil moisture, evapotranspiration and runoff, or a nutrient box model can show transfers among atmosphere, soil organic matter, inorganic soil pools and plant biomass. One common simplification is to lump spatially and biologically diverse parts of the system into a few homogeneous compartments (a “box” model) and to use averaged rates for fluxes between those boxes. That simplification makes the system easier to understand and analyze, but it can hide important local variation or non‑linear behavior (for example, soil microenvironments that strongly retain nutrients or small areas that generate most of the runoff), which can cause the model to under- or overestimate fluxes and mask threshold effects. Because of these trade-offs, modelers should state assumptions clearly, validate models with observations, and use sensitivity analyses to see how simplifications affect conclusions.
