King Tutankhamun’s tomb was found in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt. In November 1922 archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered the relatively intact tomb, which contained a series of chambers and nested stone and wooden coffins. Inside were rich funerary goods including the pharaoh’s famous gold funerary mask, three nested gold-covered coffins, a gilded stone sarcophagus, jewelry, chariots, statues, furniture, and ritual objects. The wealth and preservation of the finds gave scholars an unprecedented view of 18th Dynasty burial practices and daily life.
