The very earliest pottery appears in East Asia among hunter‑gatherer groups — notably at Yuchanyan (China) around 20,000–18,000 BP and Jōmon Japan from about 14,500 BCE — with Neolithic farming cultures in the Near East and China producing refined earthenware by c. 7000–3000 BCE. By the Bronze and Iron Ages (c. 3000–500 BCE) Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Minoan and Greek civilizations had perfected wheel‑thrown, glazed and painted wares (for example Greek black‑figure and red‑figure pottery). In the medieval period Islamic potters developed tin‑glazed and lusterwares (9th–13th c. CE) while China produced high‑fired porcelains in the Tang–Song era (7th–13th c. CE) and famous Ming export porcelains (14th–17th c.). European hard‑paste porcelain was first made at Meissen around 1710, mass production spread with industrial potteries like Wedgwood in the late 18th century, and the 20th century brought advanced technical ceramics for electronics, aerospace and medicine.
