In the United States the two biggest parties are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party; smaller or "third" parties include the Libertarian Party and the Green Party.

2) Some voters decide to support a third party because they do not feel represented by the two major parties and want a candidate who matches their beliefs. Others support third parties because they offer new ideas or focus on issues the big parties ignore, such as stronger environmental protections or more personal freedom.

3) First, a strong third party would make elections more competitive and give voters more real choices, which can make politicians pay more attention to what people want (for example, if many voters back a Green Party candidate for climate action, major parties might pass stronger clean-energy laws). Second, a strong third party would improve representation by giving groups that feel ignored a voice in government, so communities with different views could get laws that better match their needs (for example, a Libertarian candidate might push for lower taxes or stronger privacy protections).
