Political parties are groups of people who share similar ideas about how the government should work and who work together to win elections. They choose candidates, make plans called platforms, and tell voters what they believe.

Voters might support a third party when the two big parties do not listen to their problems or do not have plans for issues they care about. For example, someone worried about climate change might vote for a Green Party candidate if Democrats and Republicans offer weak environmental plans.

A strong third party would give people more choices and make elections more competitive, so major parties would have to pay attention to different ideas. It would also help new voices get elected — for example, a labor or progressive party winning local seats could make sure those voters’ concerns are discussed in government.
