A post-and-lintel system is a basic form of construction in which vertical posts (columns) support horizontal beams (lintels) that span the space between them. A key problem is that the lintel must resist bending and tensile stresses over the span, so long or weak lintels can crack or fail, and the system requires closely spaced supports or very massive beams for large spans. An example of an ancient structure using this method is Stonehenge, where upright megaliths support horizontal lintel stones. Later builders developed arches and vaults to overcome the span limitations of post-and-lintel construction.
