Relief: in printmaking and sculpture, relief describes a surface where the design is raised above the background; in relief printing the raised areas take ink and transfer the image. Ground: in etching, a ground is an acid-resistant coating (wax, resin, or varnish) applied to a metal plate so the artist can draw through it to expose selected areas. Etch: to etch is to use an acid or mordant to chemically bite into the exposed metal (or glass), creating recessed lines or textures that can hold ink for printing or produce a permanent mark.
