Between 4000 and 3000 BCE the Fertile Crescent experienced a major cultural shift from small, kin-based farming villages to large, densely populated urban centers (the so-called urban revolution, exemplified by Uruk). Economic life changed as full-time craft specialists, long-distance trade, irrigation agriculture, and standardized production replaced mostly subsistence farming. Political and social organization became more centralized and hierarchical, with temples and palaces, specialist administrators, and growing social inequality. At the same time new technologies and record-keeping—most famously proto-cuneiform writing and advanced metallurgy—emerged to manage resources and state affairs.
