The Persian (Achaemenid) Empire accomplished lasting administrative and political innovations, especially the division of the realm into satrapies overseen by governors with a professional bureaucracy and standardized systems of taxation and law. They built major communication and trade infrastructure — notably Darius I’s Royal Road, an efficient relay postal system, and large-scale canal and irrigation projects — and introduced standardized coinage (the daric) that facilitated commerce. Persian rulers are also noted for policies of cultural and religious tolerance (exemplified by Cyrus’s decree allowing exiled peoples to return home) that promoted stability across a multiethnic empire.
