I think the machine gun had the biggest impact on World War I. Machine guns could fire lots of bullets very fast, so soldiers could not run across open fields without being shot. That forced armies to dig long trenches and fight from them, which made the war slow and deadly. If my classmate says tanks or gas were more important, I would say those mattered too, but machine guns changed how the whole war was fought from the start.
