Saturday Surprise


Most 13-year-olds enjoy sleeping in on Saturday mornings, but not Logan. Each Saturday as the sun was rising, he urged his dad to take him to the neighborhood basketball court. "If we go early, the court will be free," Logan insisted. What he did not share with his dad was his wish to avoid parading his mediocre basketball skills in front of his peers. With some time to practice in private, I know I'll get better, he thought.

After several minutes of shooting hoops one Saturday, Logan heard a rhythmic thump, thump of a basketball hitting the pavement. He looked over his shoulder to see a tall player effortlessly shoot a basketball.

Logan's dad whistled and exclaimed, "Nice shot! The ball didn't even touch the net!" Turning to Logan, he asked, "Isn't that the basketball star from Lincoln High--the one who is always in the newspaper?"

Logan nodded and replied, "Jamie Chavez."

Indeed, Jamie was a local celebrity. He had led his basketball team to two state championships, and Logan was his biggest fan. Logan regularly cheered on Jamie and his team at games, admiring the expert way they advanced the ball down the court with confidence. Like dancers following a well-choreographed routine, the players' moves were smooth, and their timing was impeccable. As the team captain, Jamie had a role in planning the team's impressive plays.

"I thought Jamie twisted his knee during the last game," Logan's dad said.

"Maybe he is here to do free throws so that he can practice while he rests his knee," Logan replied. He probably wants to practice his own way, Logan thought. I guess I'm not the only one wanting to avoid the inquisitive eyes of others. Honoring Jamie's privacy, Logan turned his attention back to his own layups.

Before long, Logan heard a voice from behind him say, "Hey, good work." Jamie approached Logan. "If you flick your wrist a little more, the ball will go in every time."

"Thanks," Logan said in surprise. He perked up to face Jamie.

Jamie shared a few more tips. As he did, a group of neighborhood kids began to gather. One by one, they asked to join Logan and Jamie. Soon the group was playing a game. Jamie served as their coach, giving pointers to the players from the sidelines.

When the game was over, a winded, but happy Logan joined his dad on the sidelines. Walking by, Jamie called out, "Way to hustle. See you next Saturday, bright and early?"

Logan nodded and waved in response. He tried to look casual, but he was beaming inside.
