Though Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King both had long careers and are members of the tennis Hall of Fame, they are best known for one match they played against each other.

Bobby Riggs first became a professional tennis player in 1941, at the age of 23, two years before King was born. Riggs was two inches taller than King, but he was short for a male tennis player. He made up for his lack of size by being fast on the court and knowing how to control the ball. King was also a fast player, but she was known for hitting hard and playing close to the net. Riggs won many championships and was named the best male tennis player in the world. King, too, won many championships and was named the best female player in the world.

Though Riggs retired from professional tennis in 1958, he met King for one match in front of a live audience of 30,472 at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, and a TV audience of over 90 million people.

On that day in September of 1973, King played a different game than usual. Instead of hitting hard, she moved fast and hit soft. This made Riggs run for the balls. He wasn’t as fast as King, so couldn’t keep up. He wore himself out chasing the balls, and eventually lost the match to King.
