In a place called Decorah, Iowa, a family of celebrities lives in front of the camera. Viewers can tune in regularly to watch the family have dinner, sleep, and interact with each other as they go about their business. The members of this family are known as Decorah Bald Eagles, and the parents have been nesting here for over ten years!
The Raptor Resource Project has been working since 1988 to preserve birds of prey such as eagles, falcons, and owls. One of their projects has been to install webcams near these birds’ nests so that people from all over the world can watch them and learn about these magnificent creatures.
Each year around February or early March, the Decorah Bald Eagles begin to prepare for the arrival of 2 to 3 brand-new babies, also known as eaglets. In late March or early April, the eaglets hatch. The mother eagle keeps them warm and feeds them small pieces of meat. The father eagle does most of the hunting and also spends time in the nest.
Just like human babies, as the eaglets grow they become more independent. Around June each year, the eaglets fledge, or take their first flight. Between August and October, the new eagles leave the nest for good to begin their own lives as adults. Mom and Dad enjoy a few months of rest before beginning the cycle all over again.
Researchers at the Raptor Rescue Project are very proud of all the attention their webcams have gotten. They hope that this project will help more people become interested in preserving, or helping, birds of prey and other wildlife.
