Facilitator (or moderator): this role guides the flow of the discussion, keeps the group focused on the agenda, manages turn-taking, and ensures that everyone has an opportunity to speak. For example, a facilitator might open the meeting by stating the objectives, gently redirect an off-topic tangent back to the agenda, and ask quieter members directly for their input to balance participation.

Recorder (or scribe/secretary): the recorder listens for key points, decisions, and action items, then captures and organizes those details so the group has an accurate record to refer to afterward. For example, a recorder might write down agreed-upon tasks with assigned owners and deadlines during the discussion and distribute concise meeting minutes afterward.

Active participant (or contributor): participants bring ideas, ask questions, evaluate others’ contributions, build on proposals, and accept responsibilities needed to move the group’s work forward. For example, an active participant might propose a specific solution to a problem, provide evidence or rationale for it, volunteer to carry out the next step, and respond constructively to feedback from teammates.
