Good Cookies
When Ben got home from school, he was hit with the sweet scent of chocolate. "Mmm," he murmured. "What did you make, Dad?" His dad worked at a popular bakery downtown, and he made incredible desserts.
Dad poked his head out of the kitchen. "Chocolate chip cookies," he said. "They just came out of the oven. Go ahead and help yourself, but save some for your sister." Ben's sister, Maria, was still at band practice.

The cookies were warm and gooey, and Ben was hungry. At lunch, he'd eaten only an apple and a few pretzels. Ben took two cookies and washed them down with a glass of milk. Then he took another two.
He went into his room to do homework, but the lingering buttery-chocolate scent lured him back to the kitchen. "Maybe just one more," he said to himself. One more turned into two more. He ate one after another, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Before he knew it, the cookies were all gone, and only crumbs remained on the baking sheet. Maria would be furious,
