Part 1 - Complete the table (5 points)

For this lab, using your favorite Word Processing application (ex. Google docs), you are going to create a list of the first ten (10) advertisements you see online. Use the internet in the way you typically do. Visit your favorite websites. See what is happening on social media, if you already have an account(s) and have permission from your teacher or guardian. Check out your preferred news source or visit other pages you typically give a glance. As you move through the pages, create a list of the first ten (10) advertisements that you see. You may see the same companies or products more than once. If so, simply include it on your list each time you see it.

Unit 1 Template (filled)

Part 1 - Complete the table (5 points)
For this lab I browsed the web as I normally do and recorded the first ten ads I saw.

# Name of Company / Product Where did you find this ad?
01 Nike Instagram feed (sponsored post)
02 Samsung Galaxy YouTube pre-roll ad (on a tech review video)
03 Amazon Prime Facebook sidebar sponsored ad
04 Spotify Premium Spotify free account (audio ad between songs)
05 Grammarly Gmail promotions sidebar
06 McDonald’s TikTok sponsored post in the For You feed
07 Coursera LinkedIn feed (sponsored course ad)
08 Casper (mattress) New York Times article (native banner)
09 Zoom Reddit promoted post in r/technology
10 Hulu (streaming service) News website banner ad (sports site)

Part 2 - Answer the questions (5 points)

How long did you have to be online to see ten (10) advertisements?
- About 10–15 minutes of normal browsing (social media, YouTube, a news article, email, and Reddit).

Did this surprise you? Why or why not?
- Not really surprised. Many free services and news sites rely on advertising, and social platforms/streaming services insert ads frequently. Ads are woven into the experience (feeds, pre-roll video, sidebars), so they appear quickly while moving between sites.

Where (which site) did you find the most advertisements on a single site?
- Facebook/Instagram had the most ad density overall (multiple sponsored posts in the feed plus sidebar ads). News sites also showed multiple banner/native ads on a single article page.

How many of these are products that you already use or are likely to buy? Discuss if the advertisement you saw would likely push you to make the purchase.
- Products I already use or have used: Amazon Prime, Spotify, Zoom, Grammarly.
- Products I might consider buying in the future: Samsung phone (when I need a new phone), Casper mattress (if I were shopping for a mattress).
- Would the ads push me to buy? Mostly no from a single exposure. For services I already use (Amazon Prime, Spotify, Grammarly, Zoom) the ads are reminders rather than motivators. For big purchases (phone, mattress, Hulu subscription) an ad could influence me only if it included a strong discount, positive reviews, or solved a clear need I already had. Repeated, targeted ads plus good reviews/promotions are more persuasive than a single random ad.
