I am the woman in the boat, and I remember one night when I rowed out alone, trying to find God. The sky was low and woolly, the moon a pale coin I could not reach. I felt the rough oar rub my palms until they burned and the boat tip under my weight with every stroke. Salt spray stung my lips and left a metallic taste; my clothes clung cold and damp to my skin. I could hear only the steady slap of water against the hull, the wood creaking like an old house, and my own breath, fast and small. The smell of wet rope and seaweed hung heavy, and somewhere far off a bell tolled, thin and distant. Fear and hope sat side by side in my chest — I was ashamed and desperate, scared I might drown in what I was looking for, yet I kept rowing, each stroke equal parts confession and insistence, moving toward something I couldn’t name but needed to see.
