This is an excerpt from a letter written by a soldier fighting on the western front.

Picture to yourself our life here. There is an incessant thudding of guns in the distance to concentrate one's mind on the beastly shells. It becomes an obsession with some poor fellows who have been wounded, or been through some hideous time in the trenches or the attack. The only antidote is preoccupation of some other kind, something to take the mind off the war. Well, what have we? Reading? A few papers now & again! A game of bridge sitting on the sides of ramshackle temporary beds, or on a soapbox! All the side shows of civilisation are afar off, & we live a most primitive life, well fed it is true but in the style of a miner's cottage, though much dirtier. The odds and ends of time between work are so hard for the ordinary man to fill in. Of course it does not affect me quite so much, as I have official permission to sketch.

Which statement best summarizes the soldier’s thoughts?

Living in the trenches was mostly dull, with little to occupy the soldiers’ time.
Living in the trenches could be deadly, but also very exciting.
Living in the trenches was a lot like living back home, with both ups and downs.
Living in the trenches was very dangerous, with few of the comforts of home.

He emphasizes the constant shelling leading to obsession and the scarcity of diversions, primitive conditions, and how hard it is to fill spare time.
