I Am American
by Jennifer Tibbets
(TY SMITH enters. SILHOUETTES pantomime work and hum “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”)
TY SMITH: I am American. My ancestors were taken from Africa in the 1750s and sold into slavery in Virginia. They worked from sunup to sundown, growing cotton while others grew rich. Life was so hard they created music—spirituals and later the Blues—to ease their pain. (SILHOUETTES join hands, singing softly.) It took over a hundred years for them to be free, and another hundred to live without segregation. Still, I am American. My family’s blood is in this soil.
