During the drafting of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, early Americans debated how much power states and the federal government should have and what kind of balance would be best to maintain a democratic government. This Federalist versus Anti-Federalist debate continued through the first four US elections. In fact, it’s still a subject of debate in the twenty-first century.

Discuss what you think about this issue today. Do you think the federal government has too much power? The wrong kinds of power? Is the federal government better at managing some things than states are? Are states better at managing some things than the federal government? Include examples and reasons for your claims. I believe the best approach is a pragmatic balance: the federal government should retain strong authority over national defense, interstate commerce, civil rights, and large-scale crises (e.g., coordinating pandemic response, enforcing desegregation, running Social Security) because those problems cross state lines and require uniformity and resources that states alone often lack, but states should have primary control over education, local policing, land use, and many public-health implementation choices where local knowledge and experimentation produce better results and greater democratic accountability. My concern is less that the federal government exists than that its power has sometimes expanded through broad administrative rules, preemption, and unfunded mandates in ways that reduce local flexibility and create one-size-fits-all policies; conversely, excessive state autonomy can produce a patchwork of rights and services that deepens inequality. So I favor cooperative federalism with clearer constitutional limits, stronger oversight of federal agencies, and protections against unfunded mandates so national goals can be met without destroying local responsiveness.
