Political parties are groups of people who share similar ideas about how the government should work and who work together to pick candidates and win elections. Some voters might support a third party because they feel the two big parties do not represent their ideas, and they want a new choice. Other voters pick a third party to send a message that the major parties should change or pay attention to different problems. A strong third party would make our democracy more representative because it would give voters more choices and let people with different views, like environmentalists or small-government supporters, see their ideas in elections — for example, Green and Libertarian candidates were on many ballots in 2024 and brought attention to those issues. It would also make the big parties listen more and change their plans so more people are heard; in 2024 some major candidates talked about ideas that third-party campaigns highlighted. Finally, a strong third party could help more people want to vote because voters who feel left out by the two big parties might join in and vote for the party that matches their beliefs.
